As we enter the final week of the 2018-2019 season here’s a chance to study the penulitmate round of matches in Divsion 1 (Division 3, where the 2nd XV play, will be covered later in the week).
Minety’s fine 29-22 win over Pewsey Vale has taken the club above Trowbridge into 6th place in the league although it’s not clear how the league table has been managed since both teams have 52 points yet Trowbridge have a better Points For / Points Against record. No matter – it’s there in black and white. Next week Minety take on 4th placed Warminster at home while Trowbridge travel to 11th placed Calne, so Minety will need to pull out all the stops if we are to cling on to that 6th place.
Elsewhere, the shock of the weekend came at Royal Wootton Bassett where the home team inflicted Combe Down’s first defeat of the season by 32-10. Combe Down are already champions but a loss will have hit them hard so close to the end of the season.
Avonvale did Minety favours by defeating Trowbridge and denying them a losing bonus point and a four try bonus point.
In the battle for 3rd place Warminster inflicted a real beating on Melksham, coming through 45-10 against a team who had inflicted a heavy defeat of Minety just two weeks ago.
Supermarine’s quest for a league win failed again as they were heavily beaten at home by 9th placed Chippenham while Sutton Benger secured 8th place in the league come what may with a 30-10 win over Calne, who stay 2 points behind Pewsey.
In the final round of Fixtures, MInety (6th) play Warminster (4th); Avonvale (2nd) play Pewsey (10th); Calne 11th) play Trowbridge (7th); Combe Down (1st) play Supermarine (12th); and Melksham (3rd) play Royal Wootton Bassett (5th).
