Results from the Weekend

Minety’s excellent 74-17 win at Supermarine pushes Tom Claxton’s team up to 4th place in the league, one point behind Warminster who inflicted Minety’s only defeat this season in the fledgling league.

Certainly the result that caught everyone’s attention was the hammering of Chippenham at Avonvale.  Thus far, the Bath based team are averaging an astonishing 75 points per game whilst only conceding an average of 4!  There has clearly been some strengthening going on at Avonvale.  In their last match they handed out a beating to Pewsey Vale with spectators observing and commenting upon their all round qualities.  On their shirt tales are Combe Down, the other Bath based team in the league.  They are averaging a mere 55 points per game whilst conceding just 5 points in total.

Elsewhere, Royal Wootton Bassett recovered from their home defeat to Minety two weeks agao with a fine win over Warminster in a high scoring game whilst newly promoted Sutton Benger, who Minety face next Saturday at Minety Fields, fell to a home defeat at the hands of Melksham.  Pewsey recovered from theirdrubbing at the hands of Avonvale to defeat the league’s other new team, Calne.

With only two games of the season completed for teams in Division 3, it is difficult to make any judgements although Minety have played against two of the top three teams thus far in the fledgling season.  Travelling to Combe Down is never an easy task at any time of the season, but catching them early on, and with limited playing resources at hand, the task was never going to be straightforward.

Elsewhere, new team Amesbury kept up their impressive start to the season with a big win at Bath Saracens.  3rd placed Chippenham benefitted from a walk over against Supermarine whilst Bradford overcame Swindon with some ease and Warminster defeated Melksham away from home.

Next Saturday (6th October) both Minety teams will be at home, the 1st XV against newly promoted Sutton Benger whilst the 2nd XV  entertain Melksham.  This will be the only time (subject to re-arrangements) that the two Minety teams will play at home on the same Saturday this season. These games will be followed by the Oktoberfest Social event (details elsewhere on this site).
