Results from around the league

Minety’s win at Chippenham on Saturday gained the club 4 points for winning and a further bonus point for scoring 4 or more tries (we scored 6). The five points mean that we keep up with Trowbridge in the fight for a top 6 place come the end of the season and also know that Royal Wootton Bassett, in 5th place, are not out of range.

Elsewhere, next week’s visitors to Minety Fields, Combe Down, kept up their relentless march on the title with a convincing win over Melksham, who started the day in 3rd place but slipped to 4th by the end of proceedings. Combe Down have won all of their matches and only failed to gain a 4 try bonus point in 3 of the 18 league matches they have played.

Avonvale kept up the appearance of pressure with a big win over 5th placed Wootton Bassett while Warminster, who started the day in 4th place moved above Melksham with a bonus point winning try away at 11th placed Calne.

In the other games, Trowbridge inflicted more pain on bottom club Supermarine, still without a win in 18 matches, the bonus point keeping the gap to Minety of just 2 points, while Pewsey hauled themselves above both Calne and Chippenham with a good win over Sutton Benger.

With just four more league matches to come this season the run in looks like this:

Minety: Combe Down (h), Melksham (a), Pewsey Vale (h) and Warminster (h). Three home matches might appear to give Minety an advantage but actually the village club has to face teams in 1st, 3rd and 4th place in the run in.

Trowbridge: Sutton Benger (a), Pewsey Vale (a), Avonvale (h) and Calne (a). Of those four matches, only one, Avonvale, is against a team higher than Trowbridge in the existing league standings.

Royal Wootton Bassett: Calne (h), Chippenham (a), Combe Down (h) and Melksham (a). Of the four, two are against teams above them.

Minety’s run for a top 6 or better finish will almost certainly come down to player availability; the squad, now number 44 who have played 1st XV this season, is strong enough but can we get our strongest 18 out in every match?

It’s down to the players!
