Dorset & Wilts Division 1 North
Pewsey preVale
Pewsey Vale 1st XV 53pts – Minety 1st XV 11pts
Minety’s battle to avoid relegation got that little bit harder on Saturday as they failed to get to grips with fleet-footed and well-organised Pewsey Vale.
Second in the league Pewsey started confidently, putting pace on the ball and showing good hands despite the arctic conditions. Minety’s tackling lacked conviction and the home side were soon piling up the points, running in several tries before the visitors finally got on the board thanks to two penalty goals from skipper Tom Fitzcharles.
It was the same story in the second half, with Pewsey’s speed and excellent support play proving too much for Minety. The visitors struggled at the breakdown and, when they got the ball, kicked poorly from hand.
With the game already well out of their grasp, Minety enjoyed a late spell of possession that allowed flanker Gareth Peirce to finish the game by diving over for a consolation try.
Just one place above the drop zone, Minety now urgently need to win their remaining two fixtures, at home against Trowbridge seconds on 6 April and away against fellow strugglers Calne on 13 April.
