Minety RFC 1st XV v Cricklade RFC

Saturday 10th January 2015

Dorset & Wilts Division 1 North

Impressive Minety dispatch Cricklade

Minety 1st XV 32pts – Cricklade 13pts

A cold wind blew Minety to victory as they hosted Cricklade in an ill-disciplined yet hugely entertaining encounter. With eight tries and a single score separating the teams until the 75th minute this the game was on a knife edge until three Minety tries in the final 5 minutes sealed the victory.

Up the hill and into the breeze in the first half Minety stuck after 2 minutes. A blindside break by skipper Steve Brown turned the visitors and he was able to feed Elis Garland, who outpaced the defenders to score under the posts. Ash Windle converting.

Cricklade sprang into action, using their power down the hill to run in an unconverted try two minutes later after some poor Minety tackling. Five minutes later they scored again, this time exploiting their dominance in the set set scrum before scoring out wide. A Cricklade penalty after 20 minutes made the score 7 – 13 and that’s how it stayed until half time.

Within five minutes of the restart a blindside break from scrum half Duncan Simpson saw him race away to score. Five minutes later it was Luke Radcliffe’s turn as he squeezed in at the corner to retake the lead. 17 – 13.

With only five minutes to go a driving tackle by James Stuart allowed Minety to wrestle the ball free and crash over for a try and 22 – 13 lead.

From the restart Minety moved the ball into the middle, recycled quickly and found Garland. A burst of acceleration and he was past the tiring Cricklade defenders before finding Radcliffe who was stopped 30m out.  Flanker Brown gathered the ball to score in the corner.

A breakaway interception by Dale Langdon with the visitors hammering the Minety line took the ball to half way before passing to Garland to finish off in the corner.
