Minety Annual Invitation Seven-a-Side Tournament

Saturday 8 May 2010

Army Fijians show how it’s done!

Final:  1st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers 14 pts – 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment 27 pts

Four teams took part in this year’s tournament, which was held in miserably cold and windy conditions. In addition to the hosts, there was a side from Pewsey RFC and two army teams, representing the First Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the Second Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment respectively.

The two army sides were full of Fijian nationals who proved to be excellent sevens players. Together they provided some hugely entertaining running and passing displays and showed the others how really to play the game. The afternoon was further brightened by a barbecue and beer tent organised by Rodney Park and Tony Kemp.

The tournament consisted of a league stage followed by a final. The results of the round-robin were as follows:2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment34Minety171st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers51Pewsey7Minety51st Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers312nd Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment29Pewsey7Pewsey17Minety5

The final was played between the Fusiliers and the Welsh Regiment and was watched by a full touchline of supporters.

An early try almost from the kick off, by the Welsh, got the entertainment underway.

The encounter was hard fought, with some big tackles from both sides, some of which were deemed to require a caution by the referee Brendon Rice.

The Welsh scored their second try from a quick line-out in their own half. They added a third before half time with some excellent passing from one side of the pitch to the other before creating a two-on-one overlap which was executed perfectly.

The second half saw the Welsh  continue to keep possession. A patient build-up eventually led to a break of tackle and a fourth try for the Welsh.

The Fusiliers were not to be outdone and with a bit of possession and pressure they were able to break the Welsh defence and score a try of their own and shortly follow up with another.

The Welsh had the last say with a well worked  fifth try to round off game and clinch the tournament.

Minety would like to give a big thank you to Pewsey RFC for their help in organising the visiting teams and to all the players and spectators for their contribution to a very enjoyable afternoon.
