Minety 2nd XV v Wootton Bassett 3rd XV

Saturday 19 February 2011

Dorset & Wilts Division 3 North

Spirited seconds come first

Minety 2nd XV 12 pts – Wootton Bassett 3rd XV 7 pts

Minety seconds showed what they were made of with a gutsy winning performance against a Wootton Bassett third team fortified by fixtureless second team players.

Playing downhill in the first half, Minety opened the scoring with a short-range try from prop Matt Oliver, driving over from a ruck.

Outside centre and Minety man-of-the-match Simon Newman broke several tackles as he sped in for his try, and a successful conversion kick by Gareth Peirce made it 12-nil to Minety at the end of the half.

Reinforced by a slew of second team players, Wootton Bassett enjoyed a period of ascendancy after the break, but stout-hearted tackling from their hosts restricted them to a single converted try. It was not enough, and Minety finished powerfully and five points ahead.
