Minety despatch Calne.

A warm sunny afternoon in Calne saw the home side entertaining their Vice Presidents and Minety RFC. The stage was set for a Calne victory unfortunately the visitors had not read the script and acted out an entirely different performance.

Five minutes in a show and go from the visitor’s effervescent Elis Garland at 10 saw him dot down under the posts for the first of Minety’s six tries. Ash Windle converted the first of his seven successful kicks at goal.

Moments after a successful Windle penalty Made the score 0 -10, Minety were able to strike again. The dynamic scrum half Duncan Simpson pounced on a loose ball to race away for the first of his three tries. Windle added the extras for a 0 – 17 lead after 22 minutes. Three minutes later Windle was able to extend the visitor’s lead with another penalty.

Now trailing by 20 points the home side were galvanised into action and scrum pressure on the Minety line eventually lead to a penalty try on the half hour mark. Minety responded in fine fashion. Following a mark deep in the Minety 22 the youthful Pete Hazel took a quick tap to feed Garland. After a searing break he unleashed Dale Langdown up the touch line. When he cut back inside he found Simpson on the burst. With Tom Windle on his shoulder, the no 8 lit the after burners for the final 30m. Big brother converted to make it 7 – 27 at half time.

Minety’s fourth try and Simpson’s second came after 53 minutes following a quick tap and interchange with Garland before he touched down in the corner. Windle, un phased by the narrow angle, duly converted. On the hour mark a trademark bulldozing run from Minety centre Luke Radcliffe finished off another Garland and Langdown led break. Windle adding the conversion.

The home side were not done and were able to add to their tally. 10 minutes from time they pressured the Minety line, eventually scoring a well worked try in the corner.

A Minety scrum following the re-start saw Tom Windle break right from the base. A smart inside ball to Skipper Steve Brown enabled the flanker to put Simpson in space to race away for his third and final score of the afternoon. Final score 12 – 46.
