Melksham too much for Minety
Melksham 1st XV 34pts – Minety 1st XV 12pts
With their pack increasingly dominant in the set pieces and their runners hungry to move the ball, Melksham proved too strong for an off-form Minety.
Gethin Roberts jumped competitively for Minety at the lineout, but as he was the team’s only recognised jumper, his side struggled for possession. Minety scrummaged well for a while. Unfortunately for them, they also made some foolish errors in defence, slipping off simple tackles and not putting Melksham under enough pressure from kicks.
Minety’s rucking was also poor. Too often, when they put together a fluent passage of play with the ball in hand, it ended in a turn-over.
No such problems for the hosts. Looking organised and sprightly, Melksham took their chances and scored two unanswered tries before the break.
Minety did manage to put together some scoring moves in the second half, and there were tries for Duncan Simpson and Robin Greenway.
But the visitors’ scrummaging began to fade, allowing the home side a solid platform from which to move the ball. Melksham took full advantage, running in a further four tries.
This Saturday, Minety have a must-win game at home versus fellow league strugglers Avonvale.
