Calne contained
Dorset & Wilts Division 3 North
Calne 2nd XV 5pts – Minety 2nd XV 17pts
Minety seconds saw off a strong challenge from their counterparts at Calne.
Welcoming scrumhalf Andy Brown back from duty with the firsts, Minety put up a solid defence to contain a lively start from their hosts.
Ranged against a powerful home unit, the visitors’ pack gradually gained the upper hand. Seizing turn-over ball, they showed quick hands as the ball was moved down the line before skipper Steve Murray crashed over for a try under the posts.
Flyhalf Andy Edwards kicked the extra two points.
When the Minety pack secured lineout ball inside their hosts’ 22, they surged forward. Number 8 Sean Richards crashed over for the try, making it 0-12 at the break.
Calne responded well in the second half and although the visitor’s tackling held them out for 20 minutes, they eventually carved out a try of their own.
Minety were weakened by injuries to prop Matt Park and centre Chris Jones but stuck to their game, containing Calne’s further efforts to score.
A final try from Edwards settled the matter in Minety’s favour.
Murray congratulated his team on another excellent performance and awarded Man of the Match to lock Brian Millward for “a number of decisive bone-crushing advances into the Calne defence to set up quality phases.”
