Calne 2nd XV v Minety 2nd XV

Saturday 16 February 2013

Dorset & Wilts Division 3 North

Seconds conquer Calne

Calne 2nd XV 5pts – Minety 2nd XV 15pts

Minety seconds ran in a try in each half to edge out Calne in a closely fought contest.

Both teams started strongly but steady defence all round made it hard to score. Calne were first to blink, conceding a penalty on the 22 which Minety’s Andy Edwards kicked to give his side a three point lead.

After that, Minety began to make inroads thanks to a concerted effort from their forwards. Having tied down their opponents, they spread the ball wide, where winger Sam Stevenson took it at pace, jinking past the defenders for the opening try of the game.

The sides turned round with Minety ahead eight points to nothing, but Calne struck early in the second half, catching the visitors napping with a quick try.

Regaining their composure, Minety soon had their pack running in relays again against their opponents. Prop Morgan Lightbody made excellent ground, as did Academy lock Josh Gainey, who was Minety’s man of the match for his work in catching the high ball and running it back with interest.

Finally, the pressure told, and when Calne were penalised five metres from their own line, scrumhalf Dellam Murray took a quick tap before sending Lightbody crashing over.

Edwards kicked the conversion, but Calne came back strongly and it was only solid defence, including some great tackling from Jobie Neal on his debut, that ensured the visitors were still ahead at the whistle.
